About Deirdre P. Malcolm — self-taught abstract expressionist artist

Deirdre is a self-taught, intuitive abstract artist whose work is rooted in the natural beauty of the world around us.

Beginning her artistic journey in 2018 while recovering from surgery, she initially explored seascapes and landscapes, particularly focusing on the ever-changing sky and ocean. After moving to the coast with her husband and three dogs, her love for the sea and sky was reignited, leading to a shift in style towards abstract expressionistic style painting. No longer capturing images but evoking emotions, themes of calm and chaos are central to her work, with a deep exploration of how these forces exist side by side in nature and in our everyday lives.

Using a range of materials, including textured mediums and expressive brushstrokes, Deirdre aims to evoke moments of reflection, inviting viewers to pause and connect with the emotions of the work.

My work is inspired by the beauty of nature and the emotional responses it stirs within me. The sea and sky have always captivated me, from the calm waters of a summer’s day to the turbulence of a storm. In my abstract expressionist pieces, I explore the duality between these two extremes—calm and chaos—mirroring the emotional landscapes we experience in our own lives. I’m drawn to how the tranquil surface of the water can conceal the storm beneath, just as we often mask our inner turbulence.

Painting is where I find balance, moments of silence and stillness contrasting with raw movement and energy. Through my art, I seek to convey these contrasts, using colour, texture, and brushwork to evoke feelings of both serenity and intensity. My intention is to create a space where the viewer can reflect on their own emotional journey and recognize that beauty exists in both moments of stillness and in the midst of chaos.

By embracing these contradictions, I offer a reminder that peace and beauty can be found in every aspect of life, even in the most challenging of moments.
